Please read through the entire post for important announcements and reminders!!!!
Eclipse: Please refer to Dr. Frost's email (I posted it in the post below) with information regarding our plan for the eclipse. I urge you that if you plan to check your child out to get here before 1:45. The permission form will go home today. If it is not returned by Friday then your student will not be allowed to participate in the outside portion of our day. (They will go to a designated area that will be watching the eclipse through a streamed broadcast.) We will also make it very clear to the students that if they are not following directions that we will not allow them to go outside regardless of the permission slip. The safety of all of our students and this unique teaching moment are priority number one for us!
Picture Day: Our picture day is Wednesday. Please send in the form your received at open house (or in the file) with money on Wednesday if you would like to order pictures.
T-shirt: Please send in the money and t-shirt order form by Wednesday. If you need a new form, please let us know and we will send one home.
Kilometer Club: Applications are going home today and need to be returned by Friday!
We are off to a great start to the 2017-2018 School Year! Thank you so much for your support through the first day of school, Open House and our first Bingo Night.
As you may know, the solar eclipse will occur Monday, August 21st. Our dismissal will be delayed for 45 minutes that day. Students will begin loading buses at 3pm and buses will leave Ford ES at 3:05. We request that all student check outs occur prior to 1:45 pm on August 21st..
Mrs. Cauffiel and classroom teachers have been teaching grade appropriate content about the eclipse to all students at Ford. Eclipse viewing plans have been approved for 3rd-5th grade students. A district permission form to obtain parent permission for students in grades 3-12 to participate in outdoor activities during the eclipse will be sent home today. The permission forms are due back by Friday, August 18th. A signed permission form is required for any student who will be outside during peak hours of the eclipse (2:00-3:00pm).
We will provide safety glasses for every student who returns a signed permission. We will review safety guideline with our students, but we encourage parents to have a conversation with their child as well. We are using the following resource for safety and security guidelines as recommended and outlined by NASA at: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/safety
All students in grades K-2nd and those who do not return permission will be able to watch a one hour live broadcast via IPTV from Kennesaw Mountain High School showcasing the observatory/eclipse from 1:45 - 2:45 PM. Mrs. Cauffiel and Mrs. Trammell are working on a video to send to KMHS, so Ford students will be showcased during this broadcast.
We are very excited about the opportunity to provide our students a safe way to observe the solar eclipse. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or the front office.
In case you were unable to come to Open House I have attached the power point presentation. It is not full of details, so if you have any questions, be sure to contact us and we can fill you in! Look for the information we handed out during open house and return any forms necessary!
We completed our first week in third grade and I would say it was a success! We learned lots of new routines, expectations and started working on building our little community within our classroom!!!
Coming Up!!!! Open House is this Tuesday, August 8th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Please be sure to come to learn important information about the upcoming school year!
8/11: Bingo Night, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
8/16: Fall Picture Day
8/21: School-Day Extended 45 Minutes on August 21 due to Solar Eclipse Due to the solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, the Cobb County School District will delay dismissal of elementary, middle and high school students by 45 minutes.
The peak time to experience the solar eclipse falls during our regularly scheduled elementary school dismissal time. Since student safety is always our first priority so we will delay dismissal to ensure that neither students nor employees are on the roadways during the time of the eclipse. Subsequently, high schools and middle schools will delay dismissal as well.
Schools will be provided with further guidance and instructional resources as appropriate. Parents are welcome to pick-up their child at the typical dismissal time if needed.
Curriculum: Reading/Language Arts: We use the Daily 5 format during our reading block. Many of the students used this in first and second grade and they are very comfortable with this format. We started a small part of this last week and hope to be in full operation within the next couple of weeks. Math: We are working on place value and rounding this week. We will then review all of the addition and subtraction strategies, but they love when we show them the algorithm for these types of problems! Science: For the first couple of weeks will jump right into Rocks and Minerals. We have lots of great hands on activities that will build the foundation for their earth science studies. Social Studies: We are so excited about the new social studies curriculum. We will begin with Native Americans and how they adapted throughout the regions in our country. This unit will be full of great connections, literature and activities.
Please make sure you signed up with the Remind app. This is a great way for to remind you of quick things like field trips, picture day and other school activities. Text: 810-10 message: @vancekalra

I will be updating the blog every couple of weeks. I will email this out as well as keep it on the blog for future reference.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us! We are part of the puzzle that helps these kiddos be successful!
